Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of England midfielder Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid in a deal worth £35 million, beating off competition from Aston Villa for the 25-year-old’s signature.
The former Chelsea man joins Spurs on a long-term contract after just one season in Spain, where he moved in August 2024 in a switch that saw João Félix go the other way. Gallagher made 77 appearances for Atlético
in all competitions, scoring seven goals and adding steel and energy to their midfield.
“I’m so happy and excited to be here,” Gallagher said after putting pen to paper. “Spurs is an amazing club with great fans, and I want to create special moments and memories with them.”
New boss Thomas Frank hailed his latest recruit, calling Gallagher “a top midfielder” and praising his leadership and work rate.
“Conor has captained teams before, so he brings character and personality into the dressing room,” Frank said. “His running power, pressing and eye for goal are exactly what we need in midfield.”
Gallagher has 22 caps for England and featured at Euro 2024, where the Three Lions finished runners-up to Spain. After limited minutes under current national team boss Thomas Tuchel, he’ll be hoping that a return to the Premier League and a strong season at Spurs will boost his chances of making the squad for the upcoming World Cup.
Tottenham have been keen to reinforce their midfield after Rodrigo Bentancur was ruled out for around three months with a hamstring injury. Spurs sit 14th in the league table after a poor run of form but remain alive in the Champions League, even as pressure builds following a string of defeats in domestic competitions.
Gallagher, who came through Chelsea’s academy from 2006 and enjoyed loan spells at Charlton, Swansea, West Brom and Crystal Palace, already has 136 Premier League appearances under his belt. Now, with a big move to North London confirmed, the stage is set for him to become a key figure in Spurs’ midfield rebuild.
