Liberian First Division side LISCR FC have moved for experienced Ethiopian tactician Wubetu Abate, who has agreed a one-year deal to become the club’s new head coach.
Abate arrives in Liberia after parting ways with Ethiopian Premier League outfit Fasil Kenema at the end of the 2024/25 season, ending his latest spell in a league where he has coached some of the country’s biggest clubs.
Abate joins a LISCR side currently sitting third in the Liberian First Division table with 17 points, and he is expected to push the “Shipping Boys” into the title race. His appointment also makes him only the second Ethiopian coach to work in Liberia, after Selam Zeray, who handles the women’s national team.
A former player himself, Abate has built an impressive coaching résumé back home. He guided Ethiopian Coffee to their only league crown since the restructuring of the top flight in 1997, winning the championship in the 2010/11 season. On the international stage, he famously led Ethiopia to qualification for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon and the 2022 African Nations Championship in Algeria, restoring the Walias’ presence at major continental tournaments.
With his track record of winning titles and taking national teams back to Africa’s big stage, LISCR supporters will hope Abate can bring fresh ideas, higher tactical standards, and another chapter of success to one of Liberia’s most decorated clubs
