President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. has announced plans for two new football academies—one in Bong County and another in Montserrado County—as part of a youth development push aimed at building stronger pathways into Liberia’s national teams and raising standards across the local game.
Speaking in his annual message to the Legislature, President Boakai said the government, in partnership with Bea Mountain Mining Corporation, is “launching football academies in Bong and Montserrado Counties,” with the goal of creating “direct routes to national teams” and supporting professionalism and growth in Liberia’s sports sector.
Why this matters
For years, Liberia has produced raw talent—mostly from community football, school sports, and club systems—but structured, long-term development remains a gap. If these academies are implemented with clear standards, they could:
-
improve talent identification and development outside Monrovia,
-
provide consistent coaching, training schedules, and competitive exposure,
-
help players transition into top local clubs and national youth setups,
-
strengthen discipline, education support, and professionalism.
